The speaker lineup for the 2017 TEDxZumbroRiver is comprised of insightful local and national speakers with a variety of backgrounds, each with a different perspective of this year’s theme, “What’s Possible?”
Let’s meet Jimmy Chen.
Jimmy Chen is the founder and CEO of Propel. Previously, Jimmy was a Product Manager at Facebook, where he led the Facebook Groups team. He has also worked at LinkedIn and Yahoo.
Through Propel, Jimmy aims to use Silicon Valley’s technology playbook to fight poverty by building world class software for low-income Americans. Propel’s product, Fresh EBT, is used by over 400,000 Americans every month to manage their food stamp benefits and improve their overall financial health. Through Propel, Jimmy has been featured in the New York Times, PBS, and Forbes, and has spoken at Money20/20, the Code for America Summit, Stanford Business School, and Columbia Business School.
Jimmy holds a B.S. in Symbolic Systems/Human-Computer Interaction from Stanford University and lives in Brooklyn, NY.
Asked a few interview questions about his experience with the 2017 TEDxZumbroRiver, he had this to say:
Why did you want to be a TEDxZumbroRiver speaker?
TEDxZumbroRiver is an amazing platform to tell our story. The staff is clearly committed to running a professional, high-quality event.
Describe your TEDx talk in three words
Software solves poverty.
What do you hope the audience walks away with from your TEDx talk?
The same technology that powers the digital toys of our generation like Tinder and Snapchat, can be used to address meaningful social challenges. People tend to solve the problems they understand, and most people starting tech companies don’t understand the challenges of a single mom on food stamps, for example. I hope the audience walks away with a broader mindset of what can be accomplished with software and tech startups.
What are you most looking forward to as a presenter at TEDxZumbroRiver?
I’m looking forward to the energy of the audience! I’m excited to tell my story to a group that is open to new ideas.
